Humboldt High School football postseason honors

Humboldt, IA – The future of Humboldt High School football is bright as they boast five all-district selection and five honorable mentions.

Humboldt football’s season may be over but there is plenty for them to be proud about as they build into a successful program. For the first time in six season the Wildcats finished with a winning record at 5-4. They finished fourth in Class 3A-District 2 with a 2-3 record.

Humboldt season has been capped off with five players being granted all-district honors. This include Quarterback Caden Matson who was named the districts Offensive Player of the Year. Other Wildcats named all-district includes seniors backGabe Gidel and  linebacker Jake Lenning along with juniors linebacker Tanner McKimmey and offensive lineman Ben Kuehnast.

Humboldt had five players be honorable mentions. These players are  senior wide receiver Nyzier Evans, juniors wide receiver Jacob Heier, defensive back Carson Berte and offensive linemen Tracen Troyer.

Additional honor for the QB Matson includes be named 3rd team all-state as an offensive player. Matons finished the season with 1515 passing yard, 14 touchdowns and 1068 rushing yards, 18 touchdowns.

Coach Derrick Elman was named the Class 3A Region 1 Coach of the Year by the Iowa Football Coaches Association. Elman is in his third season at the helm of the Wildcats program. As noted above the Wildcats were 5-4 this season which was their first record above .500 in six seasons.

Humboldt season came to an end at the hands of Spencer in the second round of the postseason. The Wildcats season can be highlight by a big season opening win at Algona (33-20), a comeback thriller at Mason City (21-14) and a win in the opening round of the playoffs against traditional powerhouse Bishop Heelan (40-17).

Humboldt is expected to return multiple key players next season including Matson, Kuehnast and McKimmey as they look to build on the foundation they have set the first three years under current Head Coach Derrick Elman
