Wildcat softball beats Ames, vanPelt gets 600th win

Ames, IA – Humboldt High School Softball grabs 16 win of the season over Ames High School.

On Thursday, July 9, the Wildcats traveled to face a Iowa Class 5A opponent in Ames. It was a 7-0 victory for Humboldt who scored early and often to down the Little Cyclones. In the top of the first with one out Humboldt Shortstop Jori Hajek would hit a home run to give the Wildcats the lead. Three more runs scored in the second for Humboldt after First Baseman Kendal Clark lead off the inning with a homer. Wildcats manufactured two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

As a team Humboldt went 5-24 at the plate, walked twice and reach on three Little Cyclone errors.

Key individual stats:

  • Hajek was 1-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Humboldt Second Baseman Addie Thompson was 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • Humboldt Pitcher Ellie Jacobson pitched all seven innings, struck out eleven batters, gave up four hits, one walk and a hit batter.

The win against Ames was Humboldt Head Coach Doug vanPelt’s 600 career win. vanPelt has been the coach of the Wildcats for 24 seasons. He says reaching this milestone in his coaching career is a credit to the good teams he’s had the privilege to coach over the years.

Humboldt Softball is now 16-1 on the season. The next game for the Wildcats will be Friday, July 10 on the road against Southeast Valley in Harcourt. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm following the JV game.
