Humboldt, IA — Applications are due today for anyone wanting to enter their name into the Humboldt City Council Ward 1 special election.

Requirements for being able to officially file into the election that the name that is nominated needs 25 signatures from the public to be ratified and have their name on the official ballot. Jim Vermeer stepped down at the end of May and was subsequently replaced by Jim Myers to be the city council representative for the first ward. However, Myers expressed that he will not be running in the special election happening in August and has other plans as he says he has other demands that will prevent him fulfilling the needs of the office.

Only residents living in Ward 1 of Humboldt can submit entries and are due at the Humboldt County Auditor’s Office by the end of the day. Only one rumored name has been attached to the race and that is former Ward 1 council member Steve Boomgarden. The special election for the Ward 1 seat will be on Tuesday August 13th and the winner will hold the position until the end of the calendar year. Official voting for a four year term will be when general elections roll around in November. Only Ward 1 members are allowed to vote and voting will be at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt from 7am to 8pm.
