A new study released by the United States Department of Agriculture places Iowa second in the nation in agricultural sales. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) does an Ag Census every five years to compile a comprehensive source of data on farms and ranches in the United States. This showcases production practices, land use and ownership, and helps shape the future of agriculture in the nation.

In 2017, which is when the survey was conducted, American farms and ranches produced 388.5 billion dollars in agriculture sales. Iowa made 29.5 billion dollars in Ag sales, placing the Hawkeye state number 2 in the nation, trailing only behind California, which made 45 billion dollars in ag sales.
