Humboldt, Iowa — Greene County (1-0) got five goals from junior forward Junior Gutierrez as the Rams defeated Humboldt in the opening match of the 2019 season for both sides.
Gutierrez scored two early first-half goals before Humboldt senior Lucas Volf shook loose and cut into the Rams lead to make things 2-1.
But Gutierrez and fellow crew mates Yunior Caballo and Luis Velazco kept the pressure on for Greene County as they simply overwhelmed Humboldt.
The Rams led by as much as 8-1 before the Wildcats flurried late to make things interesting.
Marlon Ocampo-Chirinos scored late to cut the deficit to 8-2 and not 30 seconds later senior Tyler Bowden finished off a corner kick to make it 8-3. Greene County wouldn’t let things get any closer than that.
Humboldt fell to 0-1 with loss, they’ll rest up today before hosting Storm Lake on Thursday.
Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m. for that contest. There will be no radio.
