Dakota City, Iowa — A semi truck damaged an overpass while attempting to navigate through Dakota City Saturday, says the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Roger Bennett says the truck driver, 37-year old Timothy Miller of Nevada, Missouri was driving his 13’6″ trailer under a 12″ overpass in Dakota City.

The overpass is a bridge that used to be a railroad bridge over 1st Avenue North in Dakota City, now a part of the Three Rivers Trail.

Because Highway 3 is detoured due to bridge repair, 1st Avenue North has become a popular way to drive instead of the official detour  which is five miles to the east of Dakota City.

Law enforcement officials say that the overpass is clearly marked as 12′ clearance and there are three other signs on the approach to the overpass.

The cargo had to be offloaded and loaded onto another trailer and the trailer was then towed to Jergen’s Auto Body.

The tractor was driven away by Miller.

No injuries were reported, however $50,000 worth of damages were reported by the Sheriff’s Department.
